Aaron Rai Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer displayed remarkable nerve to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a dramatic playoff after a topsy-turvy last day of play.

The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie putt from just over eight foot to clinch the victory, repeating his sole prior tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off win over the same opponent.

Final Round Drama

Rai entered the final round with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.

The challenger moved one shot clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final hole.

Playoff Decider

This led to a playoff at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner triumphed to take the title and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even more person. To play with him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated the winner, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the moment how it is. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”

Notable Performances

The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to do, coming up a stroke short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 final round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever score on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.

The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his as well, but his chances of leading the leaderboard were hit by a bogey on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
