An Historic Event when Liam Rosenior Transcends Barriers

"Rosenior represents a top manager who understands the game inside out, which is what matters most.

"But, as the Blues' first African heritage player, I would be lying to claim this moment doesn't move me."

These were the sentiments expressed by the former Chelsea winger, who earned his historic debut for Chelsea's senior side off the bench back in April 1982.

This week, the club hired Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, 41, to be their next head coach after the exit of Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are within a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group that also owns Chelsea.

Statistics show only twelve black head coaches – excluding those holding interim roles – in England's top flight since its inception thirty-four years ago.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is that he grew up and developed his game locally, he knows this area," added Canoville.

"When kids observe someone like Liam managing the team they support, someone they can identify with, from a similar background, who comes from a household that fights for equality… that's impactful and shows them the path is there.

"Indeed, this represents a massive moment for Chelsea, for London, for every aspiring individual with big dreams.

"However, currently? We must support Rosenior, give him the necessary tools, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Do the Statistics Reveal?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit became the Blues' head coach back in the nineties thereby becoming the Premier League's inaugural African heritage manager.

A dozen years on, by 2008, Paul Ince became the pioneering black English boss in the top flight when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo is the sole additional present Premier League boss of colour.

The scarcity of ethnic minority managers throughout the English game is matched by an absence of representation in the boardroom.

According to the BFP 2023 report, 43% of Premier League players come from African or Caribbean heritage.

However, analysis by Kick It Out revealed only 3.2% of executive and leadership positions across 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic communities.

At first-team coaching positions, according to figures provided by 11 clubs, the figure is two percent.

Across all coaching positions – encompassing senior roles – from those same eleven clubs, the statistic is just 5%.

"He's certainly made history in terms of his appointment as a Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we hope to witness more such appointments," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists loads of ability present in the black and underrepresented communities... aspiring coaches want a chance to show what they can do. It is imperative to persist in striving to dismantle those barriers once and for all."

Furthermore, the new appointee is set to become the fourth permanent English head coaches currently managing in the top flight – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – which lags behind the continent's remaining major divisions in terms of homegrown managers.

16 out of twenty first division managers in Italy are from Italy, 11 of the 20 are Spanish, Twelve in the Bundesliga in Germany while Ten in Ligue 1 are French.

Current Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I'm sure every aspiring British coaches from an academy background will be, to some degree regardless of allegiance, supporting Liam.

"It is really motivating to up-and-coming British coaches in the system to witness someone land such a role with his background and everyone hopes he does really well."

It is vital to remember – he's there on merit'

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., played for the likes of West London clubs, the Hammers as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his coaching stint peaked with a brief spell at then-League One side Brentford FC in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's Honours List for his services to tackling discrimination within the sport and wider society.

After Liam retired from playing he pursued his father's footsteps. He started penning a column for The Guardian, where in 2017 he addressed the lack of diversity of black coaches. He highlighted that ethnicity does not influence ability arguing that opportunities should be given based on qualification.

He further expressed a point he has often stated: that significant under-representation leads to misunderstandings of players from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

In a podcast for a football podcast, Rosenior highlighted the way his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" or "emotional", noting that he understood the Netherlands international with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to follow him in moving from France to West London in July.

In further Guardian columns, he also confessed to being "embarrassed" upon hearing an unnamed staff member make a discriminatory remark. He pledged support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces initiative and wrote a public message to the former US President while he was in office, condemning his "blatant" racism.

Rosenior has since built his reputation as a manager – first at Hull City, later at Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney recently stating he was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" after their collaboration at Derby County.

The manager bid his farewells to his former club earlier this week before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year deal with the Blues.

The Blues had the top flight's pioneering black manager with Gullit and the first black skipper named Paul Elliott.
