Chelsea's Boss Enzo Maresca Describes Pre-Match Period as The 'Toughest 48 Hours' with the Blues
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca stated that the build-up to the weekend's win against Everton represented "the most challenging 48 hours" since his arrival at Stamford Bridge.
The 44-year-old made a somewhat cryptic message in his post-match interview even after securing a 2-0 win at home thanks to goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those crucial points lifted Chelsea once again into the English top flight's top four, perhaps lightening the atmosphere after a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the team's winless run to consecutive fixtures.
However, when questioned about the full-back's assist and general performance, Maresca surprisingly disclosed his annoyance over the preceding 48-hour period at the organization.
"How the players want to learn has been excellent and this is the explanation why I applaud them - because with so many issues, they are doing very well after a complicated week," he stated.
"Since I joined the club, the last 48 hours have been the worst because several people withheld support from us."
When pushed further on the specifics, the ex- Leicester City boss continued: "Most difficult 48 hours since I came to the club because people failed to back me and the team."
When asked if he was referring to people within at Chelsea, he answered: "In general. Overall," before clarifying when queried if it was aimed at supporters or the press: "I adore the fans and we are extremely content with the fans."
Fitness and Disciplinary Woes
Maresca also pointed to Chelsea's persistent injury and disciplinary problems, noting they had been without star attacker Cole Palmer for a large portion of the campaign, as well as losing linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and striker Liam Delap to two significant injuries.
"I really applaud the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them without Moises Caicedo, 11 of them minus Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them without Liam Delap," he explained.
"And this squad, regardless of who is playing, they are doing fantastic. Today was five games in 12 days so certainly when you see Cole Palmer there, we said many times that he's our top player but we play the vast majority of the season without our top player.
"We play five games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so happy for the players and it's something that I would like people externally to recognize because the commitment from the players is remarkable."
Chelsea's success over Everton strengthened their standing in fourth in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle to come in the coming days.
Speculation Over Maresca's Comments
It was not immediately clear who or what prompted Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the most difficult of his time as Chelsea manager.
In that timeframe, the coach had returned with his staff and players from Bergamo, held a session at Cobham, faced a pre-game press briefing where he seemed relaxed, and secured a victory over an in-form Everton team.
It was not obvious whether any particular press stories had irked him, if online comments played a role, or if it was something deeper from within the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca only sought to deny that it was an issue related to the club's supporters, some of whom have not yet fully warm to him since his appointment from Leicester during July 2024.
